Diabetes -Proper Foot-Care & Prevention

Diabetes is a very common disease; however, if left unchecked can become life threatening.  Every individual requires unique care that should include the support of a doctor, support groups, and/or families in properly accessing and making healthy lifestyle choices in order to minimize its adverse affects.   We encourage people with diabetes and their families to learn as much as possible about the latest medical therapies and approaches, as well as healthy lifestyle choices.  One important part that takes the most abuse of the body that one needs to inspect and protect is the foot.  Anyone with diabetes should be inspecting their feet daily and properly protecting them.


It is well known that people with diabetes are prone to foot problems due to the abuse a foot can take -let alone for a diabetic that may have poor blood circulation, dry skin, or experiencing callouses, foot ulcers, and/or neuropathy. Left unchecked, amputation is the end result for worst case scenarios.   Nobody wants that.

For that reason, It is important that one follow a daily regimen of caring for their foot:

  • Visit your doctor or health-care advisers at least once annually for a full examination -including the feet.

  • Daily monitoring of your blood glucose levels.

  • Check your feet daily for blisters, cuts, red spots, and swelling -call your Doctor immediately if a condition exists.

  • Trim your toenails straight across and file to minimize sharpness- have your health care advisers assist you.

  • Wash your feet (including between the toes) daily.

  • Apply lotion daily to keep your skin smooth and soft.

  • Prop your feet up when sitting, wiggle toes & rotate ankles if still for long periods of time.

  • Wear Socks & Shoes at all times.   You need a soft smooth inside -So Inspect.

  • Consider a proper shoe insole that can provide proper support and cushioning for sensitive feet

  • Prevent exposure to extreme cold & heat (including bath water).

  • Stay mentally and physically active.  Life goes on -Live It!
