Diabetic Insoles for Diabetic Patients

At present, the prevalence of diabetes among residents over 18 years old in my country is 11.6%, and the number of patients is over 100 million. Based on this calculation, there are more than 10 million diabetic patients in Guangdong Province alone, and more than 1 million of them will suffer from diabetic foot disease.

The reporter learned from the “Diabetes Foot Specialty Alliance Inaugural Meeting” hosted by Southern Hospital of Southern Medical University that diabetic foot disease is one of the main complications of diabetes, with high prevalence, high amputation, and high mortality. Experts in the Department of Endocrinology pointed out that from prevention, treatment to prevention of recurrence of diabetic foot disease, specialist doctors need to manage the whole process. At present, there are high-tech methods that can help patients prevent the occurrence and recurrence of diabetic foot disease in their daily lives.

1 Million Diabetic Patients Amputation Every Year

More Than Half Could Have Been Avoided

Xue Yaoming, director of the Department of Endocrinology, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, introduced that 12.4% of diabetic patients will suffer from diabetic foot disease. Diabetic patients due to peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease combined with excessive mechanical pressure can cause the destruction and deformity of the foot’s soft tissue and bone joint system and then cause a series of foot problems. Statistics show that 7.3 people need amputation for every 100 diabetic patients, which is 15 times that of non-diabetic patients. There are as many as 1 million diabetic amputees worldwide each year due to diabetic feet.

Not only that, but diabetic foot disease also has the characteristics of high mortality. The 3-year survival rate of patients after amputation is only 50%, and the 5-year survival rate is only 40%.

Xue Yaoming introduced that if early and correct prevention and treatment can be achieved, 45% to 85% of patients can avoid amputation.

Diabetic Insoles

Disperse plantar pressure and prevent “sugar feet”

The whole course of management of diabetic foot disease can help promote the functional recovery of patients, improve the quality of life, extend the life span of patients, and reduce the rate of amputation, disability, and mortality. Xue Yaoming introduced that the evaluation and analysis of nerve, blood vessel, and plantar pressure in diabetic patients is the basis of diabetic foot disease management to early assess the risk of diabetic foot disease and prevent the occurrence of diabetic foot disease.

Once diabetic foot disease occurs, comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment is required, including medical debridement and even surgical amputation. If the peripheral blood vessels are blocked, revascularization is also required.

However, after treatment for patients with diabetic foot disease, a large proportion of patients will relapse after two years. The main reason is that the pressure on the feet is uneven, and new pressure ulcers are produced in the long-term compressed parts. Therefore, preventing recurrence is also diabetes An important part of the whole process of podiatry management.

Xue Yaoming said that doctors can now use 3D printing technology to help diabetic patients prevent the occurrence and recurrence of diabetic foot disease. For patients without diabetic foot disease and those with diabetic foot disease after a toe or one-foot cut, it is recommended to perform plantar pressure assessment and analysis. You only need to step on the relevant machinery and equipment with bare feet, and the computer will take about 1 minute. The patient’s plantar model and pressure distribution can be established, displayed on the screen, and based on the computer model, a personalized insole that can best understand the patient’s plantar condition can be 3D printed to help patients disperse plantar pressure and avoid new pressure ulcer. It is understood that the current cost of 3D printing insoles is between 300 yuan and 1,000 yuan.
