Is it necessary for me to wear shoes while working from home?

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, our lives have changed dramatically in just a few months. Even for those who have been fortunate enough to avoid infection, some of the alterations have had unanticipated consequences in areas of our lives and health. There have also been some bright spots. Many of us have been able to spend more time with our family and have avoided long trips to work.

New Fitness Routines for the Pandemic = New Injuries
When our state went into lockdown during the early stages of the pandemic, I was seeing patients in clinic who had developed an overuse injury as a result of modifying their training program due to temporary health club closures. Many people have also decided to start a new exercise program as a result of having more free time. Walking and running are particularly popular with both groups since they allow for social separation while also being conveniently accessible. Overuse injuries are common in those who change their workout routines frequently, especially when they do it abruptly.

Going Barefoot At Home Causes Pain
In the period of Covid-19, individuals who are working from home for the first time have become an increasingly common contributing factor to overuse injuries. Prior to the pandemic, most of us spent the whole workday in shoes. Many people are suddenly working from home, and they are either not wearing shoes or are wearing them less than previously. Some patients have developed foot or lower leg pain as a result of this alteration.

An increase in barefoot activity or a change in footwear can raise the risk of injury just as much as an increase in activity or a change in training plan.

Now, I want to underline that going barefoot is a natural and healthy activity that each of us should engage in on a regular basis in order to preserve our foot strength and range of motion. It’s also crucial to remember that any change in an activity can increase the chance of pain or injury. While I advocate promoting barefoot activities, transitioning from wearing shoes every day at work to wearing shoes less frequently or not at all can be difficult for individuals. A transition time to such an activity would be ideal, but none of us had that luxury at the start of the pandemic.

Taking It Slowly When It Comes To Going Shoeless
Going barefoot for an hour or two the first day and progressively increasing time without shoes based on comfort or pain would be a safer approach to adapt. Most people would be able to endure barefoot activity better if they undertook some foot and lower leg strengthening exercises.

Wearing comfortable sandals or shoes inside on occasion may provide adequate protection to reduce pain throughout the changeover. House slippers are fantastic for keeping your feet warm, but they rarely provide enough support for those who are prone to pain; one solution is to look for slippers with enough room to add a supportive insole.

So, what’s my take on whether or not you should wear shoes at home? To increase foot strength (as long as it does not cause discomfort), I usually urge my patients to conduct at least some activities barefoot or with minimal support, but to also mix up their footwear as much as possible within their range of comfort.

Listen to your body’s cues and respect any limits, just as you would with any other activity. For some people, four hours of barefoot activity in a workday may be the limit, even if they spend weeks adapting by practicing exercises and switching shoes. Any adjustment that has an impact on your health should be implemented gradually.
