No one’s posture, gait, or step is perfectly aligned when they walk. Most of us have a natural roll in or out with each stride when it comes to foot mobility. Your foot, ankle, and knees line up in normal pronation to distribute your weight equally through your joints and help you move easily and efficiently.

With each stride, your ankle rolls too far downward and inward, which is known as pronation or excess pronation (overpronation). Supination (also known as underpronation) is a condition in which your ankle rolls too far to the outside of your foot. Pressure on the foot can be caused by the amount of pronation (or lack thereof). A higher risk of harm is associated with one or both of these disorders.

We’ll look at the differences between pronation and supination in this piece, as well as how custom orthotics can help you align your steps.

What is the definition of normal pronation?

When you push off with typical pronation, your weight is equally distributed on your foot and supported by all of your toes. The main propulsion is provided by the first and second toes, while the other toes aid in balance.

The sole of your foot faces straight back when you push off, not inward or outward. Your heel hits the ground first, and when your foot straightens, the arch of your foot attempts to absorb the impact. As the weight transfers, the foot has a tiny outward roll. It goes inwards from the outside of your foot before returning to your big toe.

Pronation is a term used to describe the act of (or Overpronation)

Overpronation is a condition in which your feet or ankles roll in excessively while you walk. Because more weight is placed on the first and second toes, your arches may flatten over time. Most people can detect whether they have overpronation because their shoe soles are unevenly worn on the inside.

Pronation can lead to foot instability and an increased risk of:

Plantar Fasciitis is a condition that affects the soles of the feet (heel pain)

Splints on the shins

Knee Ache

Back and Hip Pain

Pain in the Feet

Supination

Overpronation is the polar opposite of supination. When you walk, your ankle rolls outwards, causing this condition. More weight and strain is placed on the outside of your foot and on your smaller toes as a result of this imbalance. It can cause problems with hip and knee alignment, as well as ankle soreness, calluses, and bunions on the outside of the foot, and an increased risk of twisted ankles and injuries while jogging.

How to Get Rid of Supination and Pronation

Custom orthotics and supportive, comfortable shoes are the most effective ways to treat ankle pronation or supination.

Supportive insoles and comfy shoes will provide you with the range of motion and support you require. Custom orthotic ankle pronation insoles, which sit inside your shoes and help with motion control and alignment difficulties, are made precisely for your foot.

Custom orthotics can usually correct the affects of ankle pronation and supination in most persons.

It is critical, however, that you have insoles made specifically for your foot and ailment. For a foot scan, see your physical therapist, podiatrist, or physiotherapist. This scan will assess your foot’s weight distribution and the sort of insoles you require. Simply place an order and have your personalised insoles delivered to your door as the scan is complete.
