Are you one of the hundreds of people who have searched the web for “how do I know if I have bunions?” Maybe you’re not experiencing them right now, and you’re just wondering “for a friend?” Whatever drew you to this page, you’re in for a tremendous treat.

“What is a bunion?” you might wonder.

“A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a condition in which the first metatarsal deviates medially while the big toe deviates laterally, pressing against the second toe, resulting in a lump on the inside of the big toe joint.” Dr. Berger elaborated. It’s the most common foot problem in the United States, affecting one-third of all people at any given moment.

“How does a bunion appear?

Although a bunion may appear to be a malformed bone on the side of the toe, it is not. The bone behind the big toe will extend outward as the toe is pressed inside. In a process known as bone remodeling, mineral deposits – bone-like ‘growths’ emerge in the hyperextended joint area. It’s a maligned bone rather than a deformed one.

“What causes bunions to hurt?”

The amount of pain caused by a bunion is determined by its shape, size, and intensity (see figure 1). The bunion may be painless and scarcely detectable in very mild cases. The pain rises when the bunion evolves into a more serious condition, and it can become impossible to ignore.

If you try to wear shoes that don’t fit, it can be unpleasant, producing inflammation and friction. It could also be unpleasant if the joint at the base of your big toe takes on too much weight, creating swelling.

“How can I avoid developing a bunion?”

Wearing the proper footwear is the greatest method to avoid a bunion. Wear shoes that are a little slack on your foot, have a large toe box to keep your toes from being squashed, and provide arch support. Shoes should be comfortable and supportive; for example, high heels are not recommended for bunions.

Bunions can be treated conservatively with shoe adjustments, cushioning, and orthotics,” says Dr. Berger. These treatments usually do not cure the bunion, but they can help prevent it from worsening.”

“How are bunions treated?” you might wonder.

“Surgical treatment can be used if [the aforementioned] conservative treatment fails. The surgical therapy for a bunion can range from soft tissue rebalancing treatments to bone cuts and even bone fusions, depending on the severity of the bunion.” Dr. Berger elaborated.

“Can you tell me what causes bunions?” Is it true that bunions are inherited?”

Bunions are primarily caused by biomechanical and muscle abnormalities, and they are mostly inherited,” Dr. Berger notes. Despite the popular belief that bunions are caused by ill-fitting shoes, they are more commonly caused by your hereditary foot type or birth defects. Inadequately fitting shoes, on the other hand, contribute to the development of bunions.

“Can bunions cause other foot problems?”

“[bunions] are also typically related with ligamentous laxity, hammertoe deformities, flat feet, and rheumatoid arthritis,” says Dr. Berger.

“Do bunions influence my foot’s circulation?”

Bunions can sometimes injure nerves in the big toe, causing numbness, according to a study published in 2018. Check read this article we wrote if you’re having trouble with poor circulation in your feet: Poor Circulation in Feet? Treatments, Causes, and Recommendations

“What is the most common area for a bunion to form?”

The big toe is the most prevalent location for a bunion. Another location where a bunion can form is on the outside base of the little toe. When the fifth metatarsal bone enlarges or slides outwards, this is known as a tailor’s bunion. These, however, are less prevalent. Only 4% of people had a tailor’s bunion, while 39% had a big toe bunion, according to a research published by the American College of Rheumatology.

“What causes bunions to grow in size?” Is it possible for bunions to spread?”

Bunions aren’t contagious, therefore they can’t spread to other parts of the body. Bunions, on the other hand, can become larger and more severe if incorrect footwear is worn on a regular basis.

“How can I keep my bunion from growing worse?”

“Shoe tweaks, padding, and orthotics,” according to Dr. Berger, are the greatest ways to keep it from getting bigger. Wear well-fitting shoes with arch support that are manufactured of high-quality materials. Orthotics are insoles that have been custom-made for you based on your foot anatomy.
