What Is Peroneal Tendonitis and How Does It Affect You?

The peroneal tendons run along the outside of your leg, looping beneath the bone section of your ankle. They then attach muscles to both the outside and near the arch of your foot. These tendons can get inflamed, bulge, and even rip when they brush up against the lateral malleolus, a bony structure. This is a syndrome that can affect anyone, although it is more common in athletes, particularly runners.

You may have peroneal tendonitis if you experience soreness behind your ankle that goes away when you rest. Swelling at the rear of your ankle and soreness when you turn your foot are further symptoms. When your ankle fails to support you adequately, you may wobble. You may also notice that the affected area’s skin is heated.

 

Peroneal Tendonitis: What Causes It?

Peroneal tendonitis is linked to repetitive ankle motion and stress, as is the case with many other podiatric disorders. Runners, soccer players, and dancers are especially vulnerable to this problem, which commonly develops after years of repetitive stress on the foot and ankle. After an injury or a sudden strain on the tendons, the condition can develop fast. An ankle sprain, for example, can frequently result in peroneal tendonitis.

 

Peroneal Tendonitis Treatment

If you have these symptoms, you should see your doctor, who will perform mobility and potentially imaging tests to determine the cause of your condition. If peroneal tendonitis is the cause, your doctor will likely advise you to take it easy until the pain and swelling subside. Ice and heat, as with most foot and ankle problems, may help calm the tendons. It’s possible that you’ll be required to wear a supportive boot or another device to keep your ankle from moving. Many people benefit from over-the-counter pain medicines, however in more severe cases, cortisone injections may be required. Surgery is only used in exceptional cases.
